In an analysis of Orwell's book, Alain Besançon argues that the totalitarian society envisioned by this author can only be understood in theological terms. For it is a society founded on a transcendental denial, a refusal of the human condition, for which there is and cannot be any replica. In that society there is only power, and the purpose of power is to obtain more power. Where there should be love, there is only its absence; in the place of law, obligation, friendship, responsibility and the just, the same is also true. Truth is defined by power, and reality is only a power construct. People can be "vaporized" because their existence has always been temporary, a momentary capture in the flow of meaninglessness. The language turns against itself, so that its attempt to make any sense will always fail. The novilanguage deconstructs the word; so no one speaks or writes through it but power. (...) The 1984 machine infallibly and gently puts a sign of negation on everything that makes sense, on all values and on all things that are understandable, kind and too human. Roger Scruton
